The historical geography of the Erbil Province in the second millennium BC remains obscure, although numerous inscriptional data –compared to other periods- exist. This article is an attempt to reconstruct the geographical setting of the region in a specific short time, when king Šamšī-Adad I expanded his sway to the east Tigris region in the early second millennium BC. From this time we have data from Mari and Shemshara in which many GNs have been mentioned and this has been used as a basis to locate the cities, settlements, and routes mentioned.
